The final project of this Urban Design course was to transform a disused Department of Sanitation Marine Transfer Station located in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the South Bronx into a park. A group project, I worked with Luke Cunnington, Adam New, and Changhee Park.
Due to the remoteness of the site, we proposed a program which would make it a complete destination, including water taxi access, center for sailing and water activities, food co-op, event space, wetlands, and recreation and relaxation.
The centerpiece of the park is the transformation of the remarkable existing marine transfer building into The Ferry Terminal, a food co-op by day and unique event space by night. A public-private partnership, profits from the event space would be used to finance other park operations. These two dualities – day/night, public/private – formed the conceptual basis for the park.
